REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4-ounces of 3-ply Sport Yarn or 3-ply Fingering. 3-ounces of contrasting color (Blue).
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #1 single pointed; 1-pr. #3 single pointed.
GAUGE: 7 sts to an inch. 10 rows to an inch.
BACK: Using the #1 needles and the main color, cast on 72 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 inches. Change to the #3 needles and work in stockinette stitch for 1½ inches, ending with a purl row. Next row: Tie in blue yarn, k 1 blue; yarn to back, * k 4 white, k 4 blue; repeat from * across row, ending with k 1 blue. 2nd row: P 1 blue, yarn to front; * p 4 white, p 4 blue; repeat from * across row, ending with p 1 blue. Repeat these 2 rows twice more. 7th row: K 5 blue, yarn to back; * k 4 white, k 4 blue, repeat from * across row ending with k 5 blue. 8th row: P 5 blue, yarn to front; * p 4 white, p 4 blue, repeat from * across row, ending with p 5 blue. Repeat row 7 and 8, twice more. These 12 rows form the pattern. Continue until 5 boxes have been made. Break off blue yarn. With the white, work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7¾ inches in all.
UNDERARM BIND OFF: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 3 times. Now work even until the armhole measures 5 inches above the underarm bind off. SHOULDERS: Bind off 5 sts at the beginning of the next 8 rows, (20 sts for each shoulder). Bind off the remaining sts for back of neck, loosely.
FRONT: Work exactly as the back including the bind off and decreases at the underarm. NECK OPENING: Knit 30 sts; cast on 5 sts onto the right hand needle; place the remaining 36 sts onto a st holder. Turn, working on the 35 sts as follows: 1st row: K 2 sts, purl to end of row. 2nd row: Knit across row. (This forms a border along the front edge). Work until the armhole measures 3¾ inches above the underarm bind off. NECK SHAPING: From the neck edge bind off 5 sts 3 times. Work even until the armhole measures 5 inches above the underarm bind off. SHOULDERS: From the armhole edge bind off 5 sts 4 times. Place the 36 sts off st holder back onto the needle, tie yarn at neck edge, cast on 2 sts. 1st row: Knit across row. 2nd row: Purl 36 sts, k 2 sts. Repeat these 2 rows once more. Buttonhole: K 2, bind off 2 sts; finish row. Work back to where you bound off the 2 sts, cast on 2 sts, knit last 2 sts. Repeat buttonhole every inch. Work in stockinette stitch, keeping the garter edge along the front, work until the piece measures 3¾ inches above the underarm bind off. NECK SHAPING: At the neck edge bind off 8 sts once; bind off 5 sts twice. Then when the armhole measures 5 inches above the underarm bind off, shape the shoulders as on the other side.
LONG SLEEVES: Using the #1 needles and the white yarn, cast on 46 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1¾ inches. Change to the #3 needles and knit across the next row, increasing to 56 sts. Now work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 8½ inches in all, or as long as you need up to the underarm. UNDERARM: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side). Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 12 times. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every row 6 times. Bind off all sts. Make the 2nd sleeve the same way.
FINISHING: Sew shoulders, side seams, sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into the armhole matching the underarm seams. NECK BAND: Using the #1 needles and the right side of the work facing you, pick up and knit 76 sts around the neck. Work in ribbing for ¾ inches. Bind off loosely, knitting the k sts, purling the p sts.
PANTS: Using the #1 needles and the blue yarn cast on 76 sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for an inch. Change to the #3 needles and knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Working stockinette stitch, increase 1 stitch at each side of the work every row 9 times, (94 sts). Work even until the piece measures 3 inches in all. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work on the next row. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every ½ inch, 6 times. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every inch, twice. Work even until the piece measures 8½ inches in all. Back shaping: K 38 sts; turn, purl back. K 28 sts; turn, purl back. K 18 sts; turn and purl back. K 8 sts; turn and purl back. Change to the #1 needles and work across all sts in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1½ inches. Bind off loosely. Work other half of pants exactly the same until you come to the back shaping: P 38 sts; turn and knit back. P 28 sts; turn, knit back. P 18 sts; turn, knit back. P 8 sts; turn, knit back. Finish top as on other leg.
FINISHING: Sew front and back seams to crotch. Sew leg seams together. Casing for elastic: Tie yarn inside of waist band, * ch 5, slip st in next rib ½ inch below, ch 5, slip st in next rib ½ inch above, repeat from * around. Break yarn.
