MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY POMPADOUR, 4 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) and 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size).
7 buttons.

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

BACK … With No. 3 needles cast on 64 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1¼ inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 9½ inches in all. Place a marker at both ends of work and continue straight for 4 inches. Next row: Work across 21 sts, bind off the next 22 sts for back of neck and work across remaining 21 sts. Turn, change to No. 3 needles and work over the last set of sts only in garter stitch (k each row) until 4 ridges have been made on right side. Change to No. 5 needles. For front of neck, cast on 18 sts (39 sts on needle).

   Buttonholes are made on Left Front for boys, and on Right Front for girls, after the first ¼ inch and every 2 inches thereafter until 7 in all are made. To make a buttonhole, k 2, work 2 sts together, O, and finish row; on next row, work the O as a stitch.
   Continue in stockinette stitch, except for 7 sts of front border which are knitted on right side of work, and on wrong side are worked k 2, p 3, k 2, until piece measures 4 inches from back of neck. Place a marker at side edge (area between markers indicates where sleeves will be picked up later). Work straight for 8¼ inches. Change to No. 3 needles; still keeping 7 sts in pattern for front border, work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, over remaining sts for 1¼ inches. Bind off in pattern. Attach yarn at neck edge and work other front to correspond.

SLEEVES … With No. 5 needles, right side facing, pick up 49 sts between markers. Work in stockinette stitch for 8¼ inches. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing for 1¾ inches. Bind off in ribbing.

COLLAR … With wrong side facing, using No. 3 needles, starting at center of Left Front band, pick up 87 sts around neck, to center of Right Front band. 1st row: K 3, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * to within last 4 sts, p 1, k 3. 2nd row: K 4, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * to within last 5 sts, p 1, k 4. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for ½ inch. Change to No. 5 needles. Work 1 inch straight. Then work 6 rows (3 ridges) of garter stitch. Bind off. Sew up underarm and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons. Press through damp cloth.
