REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: Knitting Worsted.
8-ounces main color.
8-ounces contrasting color.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. size 6 & 9 aluminum.
1-pr. size 11 wooden
GAUGE: 3½ sts = 1 inch
Entire sweater is made with double yarn.
PATTERN STITCH:
Row 1: K 1, Slip 1, across row.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Purl.
Repeat these four rows for pattern.
BACK: With size 9 needles and main color cast on 36 sts. Work in k 1, p 1, ribbing for 2 in. Change to size 11 needles and k 1 row, p 1 row. Change to contrasting color and work in pattern st on next 4 rows. Change to main color and work in pattern st on next 4 rows. Continue in this manner until piece measures 9 inches from start of work.
SHAPE ARMHOLE: Cast off 2 sts at the beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end of work every other row 2 times. When work measures 5½ inches straight up from armhole shaping, shape shoulder, keeping color same as last pattern, cast off 3 sts at the beg of next 6 rows. Change to main color yarn and size 6 needles and work in ribbing on remaining sts for 1 inch. Cast off loosely.
FRONT: Work same as back until piece measures 4 inches above armhole shaping.
SHAPE NECK: Work across first 10 sts, cast off 8 sts, work over last 10 sts only, dec 1 st at neck edge on the 4th row. Continue on the 9 st until piece measures same as back to shoulder. Cast off 3 sts at side edge at beg of next 3 rows. Attach yarn and work other side of neck to correspond. With size 6 needles and main color yarn pick up 46 st around neck front. Work in ribbing for 1 inch. Cast off loosely.
SLEEVE: With size 6 needles cast on 28 sts. Work in k 1, p 1, ribbing for 1½ inches. Change to contrasting color and size 11 needles and work in stockinette sts until piece measures 11 inches. Cast off 2 sts at the beg of next 2 rows then dec 1 st each end of work every other row until 14 st remain. Cast off 2 sts at beg of every row until no sts remain. Block all pieces separately. Assemble sweater.
HAT: With main color and size 9 needles cast on 50 sts. Work in ribbing for 5 inches. Change to pattern st and work 4 sets of pattern. Keeping same color as last pattern on next row, k 1, k 2 tog. Purl back. Next row k 2 tog across row. Purl back. Break yarn leaving a strand 15 inches long. With darning needle thread yarn through the sts and draw up tight. Sew seam. Turn back ribbing.
