MATERIALS REQUIRED: Columbia-Minerva
NANTUK 4-PLY KNITTING YARN (2 or 4 oz pull skein)
OR
KNITTING WORSTED (4 oz pull skein)

Knitting Needles: One pair "Boye" Size 10

Gauge: Measured on one side of work - 7 sts to 2 inches; 9 rows to 2 inches

Note: Instructions are for a 36(36½) inch coat measured from hemline to shoulder, allowing 2 inches for blocking. To lengthen or shorten, make adjustment before armhole. As coat is reversible, there is no right or wrong side. The side on which Color A is dominant is "Side A". The side on which Color B is dominant is called "Side B".

Back: With Color A-cast on 140(160).

Note: When K'ing the K sts hold both colors in back of work and when P ing the P sts hold both colors in front of work. Twist yarns tog at beg of every row.

Row 1 - Side A: [K 1 A, P 1 B] twice, * K 1 B, P 1 A, [K 1 A, P 1 B] 4 times, repeat from * to last 6 sts, K 1 B, P 1 A, [K 1 A, P 1 B,] twice.

Row 2 - Side B: [K 1 B, P 1 A] twice, * K 1 A, P 1 B, [K 1 B, P 1 A] 4 times, repeat from * to last 6 sts, K 1 A, P 1 B, [K 1 B, P 1 A] twice.

Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
Row 6: * K 1 A, P 1 B, repeat from * across.
Rows 7 through 12: Repeat Rows 1 through 6.
Rows 13 through 17: Repeat Rows 1 through 5.
Row 18: [K 1 B, P 1 B] twice, * K 1 A, P 1 B, [K 1 B, P 1 B] 4 times, repeat from * to last 6 sts, K 1 A, P 1 B, [K 1 B, P 1 B] twice. Repeat Rows 1 through 18 for pat, working to 26 inches or 2 inches less than desired length from start to underarm, end with Row 2, 8 or 14. Width across back is 20(23) inches.

Armholes: With A and carrying B loosely, K 2 tog each time while binding off first 12(18) sts, work in pat to end. Next row with B and carrying A loosely bind off first 12(18) sts in same way, work in pat to end. Continue to work in pat on the 116(124) total sts until there are 5(6) "B" stripes above underarm on A side, end with Row 6, 12 or 18. Work 5(3) more rows. Width across shoulders is 16½(17½) inches.

Shoulders: Bind off 12 sts at beg of next 6(4) rows as before then on Large Only bind off 14 at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off 44(48) total sts for neck.

Left Front: With Color A - cast on 116(126). Join B and work in pat:

Row 1 - Side A: [K 1 A, P 1 B] twice, K 1 B, P 1 A, * [K 1 A, P 1 B] 4 times, K 1 B, P 1 A, repeat from * across.
Row 2 - Side B: * K 1 A, P 1 B, [K 1 B, P 1 A] 4 times, repeat from * to last 6 sts, K 1 A, P 1 B, [K 1 B, P 1 A] twice.
Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
Row 6: * K 1 A, P 1 B, repeat from * across.
Rows 7 through 12: Repeat Rows 1 through 6.
Rows 13 through 17: Repeat Rows 1 through 5.
Row 18: * K 1 A, P 1 B, [K 1 B, P 1 B] 4 times, repeat from * to last 6 sts, K 1 A, P 1 B, [K 1 B, P 1 B] twice. Working on 116(126) total sts, repeat Rows 1 through 18 to same length as back to underarm, end on same row as on back. Width across front is 16½(18) inches.

Armhole: Bind off 12(18) sts as on back at beg of next row, work to end. Work in pat on 104(108) total sts to match back armhole, end with same row.

Shoulder: Bind off 12 at armhole edge 3(2) times then on Large Only bind off 14 at same edge once.

Collar: Work in pat on rem'ing 68(70) total sts to about 3¼(3½) inches, end at neck edge in center of a block. Sl sts to holders, separating colors.

Right Front: With A - cast on 116(126). Join B and start pat as follows:

Row 1 - Side A: * K 1 B, P 1 A, [K 1 A, P 1 B] 4 times, repeat from * to last 6 sts K 1 B, P 1 A, [K 1 A, P 1 B] twice.
Row 2 - Side B: [K 1 B, P 1 A] twice, K 1 A, P 1 B,* [K 1 B, P 1 A] 4 times, K 1 A, P 1 B, repeat from * across.
Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
Row 6: * K 1 A, P 1 B, repeat from * across.
Finish to correspond to left front.

Sleeves: With A - cast on 102(112). Join B and start pat:

Row 1 - Side A: K 1 B, P 1 A * [K 1 A, P 1 B] 4 times, K 1 B, P 1 A, repeat from * across.
Row 2 - Side B: K 1 A, P 1 B, * [K 1 B, P 1 A] 4 times, K 1 A, P 1 B, repeat from * across.

Continue in pat for 2 inches, end on Side B. Inc each side as follows:
To Inc: Cast on 1 A st and 1 B st at beg of next 2 rows being careful to adjust yarns so that correct color loop is on needle - 4 total sts inc'd. Repeat incs every 2 inches 5 times more. Work in pat on the 126(136) total sts to 14 inches or desired length to underarm, end with Row 3, 9 or 15. Width across sleeve is 18¼(19½) inches. Mark each end of last row for underarm. Work 7(11) more rows. Bind off as before.

Weave Side A sts of collar tog then weave Side B sts tog. Weave shoulder sts tog over the "chain" of bound-off edge, matching stripes. Weave sleeves in place, matching underarms, easing in sleeves to fit armholes. Weave side and sleeve seam Weave collar to neck.

Belt: With A - cast on 7, with B - cast on 7. Twisting yarns tog at center to prevent a hole, work in St St with matching colors for 50 inches or desired length. Bind off. Fold in half length-wise and join edges.

Be Sure Your Stitch Gauge Is Correct.

Thread a darning needle and bring pieces to be joined close together. Draw up yarn in first st on upper piece, inserting needle from wrong side; insert needle from right side in first on lower piece and bring up through next stitch from wrong side - draw up yarn: * insert needle from right side in same st as before on upper piece and bring up through next st from wrong side - draw up yarn; insert needle from right side in same st as before on lower piece and bring up through next st - draw up yarn; repeat from * until all sts are joined and fasten yarn well before breaking off.
