MATERIALS Fleisher's, Bear Brand or Bucilla Kashyr Sweater Yarn, 4 skeins.
Fleisher's or Bucilla 14-inch White Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Sizes 1 and 2.
1 Fleisher's or Bucilla Steel Crochet Hook, Size 4.
Talon Slide Fastener, Style 108, 4 inches long.
IMPORTANT Check your gauge first. These directions apply only when Fleisher's, Bear Brand or Bucilla Yarns are used as recommended.
GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 in. 11 rows = 1 in.
MEASUREMENTS FOR FINISHED GARMENT
Width across back at underarm 17 ins. Width across back at shoulders 13 ins. Width across front at underarm 18 ½ ins. Length from lower edge to back neck edge 19 ins. Sleeves-Width below underarm 13 ins.
BACK-With size 1 needles cast on 116 sts for lower edge.
Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 3 ½ ins.
Next row-Continuing ribbing, work 12 sts, * increase 1 st in next st, work 7 sts, repeat from * 11 times, work to end (128 sts).
Change to size 2 needles. Work in stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row), increasing 1 st each side every 1 ½ ins. 4 times (136 sts). Work even until 11 ins. from lower edge.
ARMHOLES-Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of the next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 8 times (104 sts).
Work even until 4 ins. above underarm. Next row, work 51 sts, slip these on a holder, bind off 2 sts, work to end of row. Work even on last 51 sts until 6 ½ ins. above underarm.
SHOULDER-Bind off 4 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 8 times. Bind off 19 sts.
Slip the 51 sts from stitch holder to needle. Finish other side to correspond.
FRONT-With size 1 needles cast on 128 sts. Work ribbing as on back to increase row. Next row-Continuing ribbing, work 20 sts, * increase 1 st in next st, work 7 sts; repeat from * 11 times, work to end (140 sts).
Change to size 2 needles, increasing as for back until same length as back to underarm.
ARMHOLES-Bind off 10 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Shape armholes as for back (112 sts).
Work even until 6 ins. above underarm. Next row, work 44 sts and slip on holder, bind off next 24 sts for neck, work 44 sts. Work last 44 sts decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row 10 times. Armhole should measure 7 ins.
SHOULDER-Bind off 4 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 8 times, continuing to decrease 1 st at neck edge every 2nd row twice. Slip the 44 sts from holder back to needle and work to correspond to other side.
SLEEVES-With size 2 needles cast on 90 sts for lower edge. Work in stockinette st increasing 1 st each side every ½ in. 7 times (104 sts).
Work even until 4 ins. from lower edge. Bind off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 3 times; every 4th row 10 times. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of each of the next 10 rows; 3 sts at beginning of each of the next 2 rows. Bind off 34 sts.
CROCHET LEAF TRIMMING FOR RIGHT SIDE OF NECK EDGE-Ch 16 for stem and center of first leaf; * 1 d c in 4th ch from hook, 1 d c in each of the next 4 ch, 1 h d c in next ch, 1 s c in next ch, ch 1; continue around on opposite side of the 10 ch used, working 1 s c in each of the 7 ch, 5 s c in turning ch at point of leaf, 1 s c in each of the next 7 sts (working through both loops), slip st to ch 1 at lower end of leaf *, leaving the remaining 6 ch for stem. Repeat between *'s 7 times (always ch 16 before working each leaf). Ch 13, repeat between *'s for end leaf, leaving 3 ch for stem instead of 6. Work-ing on opposite side of ch with care not to twist leaves, work 1 h d c in first of the 3 remaining ch, 1 s c in each of the next 2 ch, ch 10, repeat between *'s for the 10th and last leaf. Work 1 h d c in slip st of leaf at opposite side, 1 s c in each st of stem to end of ch (48 s c). Fasten off.
TRIMMING FOR LEFT SIDE-Ch 58 for stem and center of first leaf to correspond to last or 10th leaf of piece for right side. Repeat between *'s as given for right side; ch 13, repeat between *'s for end leaf. Working on opposite side of ch, with care not to twist leaves, work 1 h d c in next ch of stem, 1 s c in each of the next 2 ch; ch 10, repeat between *'s, 1 h d c in slip st of leaf at opposite side, 1 s c in each of the next 6 ch; † ch 10, repeat between *'s, 1 s c in each of the next 6 ch; repeat from † 6 times. Fasten off.
SLEEVE TRIMMING-Ch 10, repeat between *'s as for right side of neck edge, ch 13, repeat between *'s leaving 3 ch for stem; † ch 16, work between *'s leaving 6 ch for stem; repeat from † 11 times; ch 13, repeat between *'s (15 leaves in all), 1 h d c in next ch of stem, 1 s c in each st to end of chain. Join with slip st to slip st of first leaf made (77 s c and 1 h d c in entire stem). Make trimming for second sleeve in same way.
FINISHING-Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with sleeve seam at center underarm, holding in extra fullness at top. Join yarn at left side of back at neck edge. Working from right side, work 110 s c around neck edge working closely to keep an even edge; continue around back opening, join with slip st. Fasten off. Steam trimming. Steam sweater. Pin trimming to respective sides of neck edge, with the beginning of each stem at the back opening and last leaf worked on right side meeting the first leaf worked on left side as illustrated. Work s c around neck edge inserting hook through a st of stem and through corresponding st of neck edge for 48 s c, then work s c across 14 sts of front leaving 2 leaves free at center. Finish to correspond to other side. Tack leaves in place, as illustrated. Work 90 s c around lower edge of each sleeve. Place trimming with center leaf at center underarm and the end leaves meeting at center front, with a space of 12 s c between each end of stem. Work a row of s c around edge inserting hook in stem and its corresponding st on sleeve working the 12 sts at center of sleeve without stem sts, leaving end leaves free.
Tack leaves to bend toward center.
Sew slide fastener to back opening.
