MATERIALS
BERNAT Chanticleur—5(6-6) balls
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 3 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 3

GAUGE: 6 sts = 1 inch; 8 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: * K in the front, K in the back, K in the front of 1 st (3 sts made from 1 st), K 3 tog, repeat from * across row.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: * K 3 tog, K in the front, K in the back, K in the front of 1 st (3 sts made from 1 st), repeat from * across row. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK: Cast on 80 (84-92) sts. Work even in pattern st for 4 inches. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and re­peat this inc every ¾ inch 9 times more. Work even on 100(104-112) sts until piece measures 11½(12-12½) inches. SHAPE SLEEVES: Put a marker at each edge of work. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and re­peat inc every ¾ inch 9 times more. Work even on 120 (124-132) sts until sleeves measure 8(8¼-8½) inches. SHAPE NECK AND SHOULDERS: On the next row work 48(50-54) sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off the next 24 sts; work to end of row. Working on both sides at once, at each neck edge bind off 4 sts 6 times and AT THE SAME TIME at each arm edge bind off 4(5-5) sts 6(2-6) times. ON SIZE 16 ONLY, bind off 4 sts 4 times more.

FRONT: Work to correspond with back until sleeves measure 6¾(7-7¼) inches. SHAPE NECK AND SHOULDERS: On the next row work 48(50-54) sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off the next 24 sts; work to end of row. Work­ing on both sides at once, at each neck edge bind off 3 sts 8 times. When sleeves measure 8(8¼-8½) inches, at each arm edge bind off 4(5-5) sts 6(2-6) times. ON SIZE 16 ONLY, bind off 4 sts 4 times more.

FINISHING: Sew underarm seams below markers. Sew shoulder seams. With right side facing you, work 2 rows s c around sleeves, neck and lower edges. Block to size.
