Knitted Coat Pattern #7483

The * is used in repeating – 'repeat from *' – means to repeat everything that follows the last *.

Knit = K; Purl = P; Stitch = st.

This pattern contains directions for a jumbo-knit coat made of two strands of heavy yarn and large needles. Make this bulky, casual coat in ¾ or full length; in white or black or a vivid color. Pattern includes two sizes: 32-34 and 36-38.

Seven (1-inch) buttons.

CAUTION: Entire coat is worked with two strands of yarn held together; this makes a heavy, soft strand. Do not work with a single strand.

GAUGE
BEFORE STARTING COAT, IT IS ADVISABLE TO MAKE A SAMPLE PIECE TO INSURE THE CORRECT GAUGE (THE NUMBER OF STITCHES AND ROWS TO THE INCH). UNLESS GAUGE IS PERFECT, THE COAT WILL NOT BE THE CORRECT SIZE.

WORKING IN STOCKINETTE STITCH (Knit 1 Row; Purl 1 Row) 3 sts = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch

FULL-LENGTH COAT (FOR ALL SIZES)

BACK
With large-size needles, cast on 89 sts for size 32-34 (or 100 sts for size 36-38).
1ST ROW: P 1, K 1, * P 1, K 6, work (P 1 and K 1) twice; repeat from * across, end last repeat with P 1, K 1, P 1.
2ND ROW: K 1, P 1, * K 1, P 6, (K 1 and P 1) twice; repeat from * across, end last repeat with K 1, P 1, K 1.
3RD ROW: P 1, K 1, * P 1, work a cable st over next 6 sts as follows: slip next 3 sts onto extra (sock) needle, holding sock needle, with the 3 slipped sts in front of work, K next 3 sts on left hand needle, K the 3 sts from extra needle (see Detail), work (P 1 and K 1) twice; repeat from * across, end with P 1, K 1, P 1.
4TH ROW: Same as 2nd row.
5TH AND 6TH ROWS: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows.
These 6 rows form pattern st.
7TH THROUGH 42ND ROW: Repeat first 6 rows (from 1st to end of 6th row) 6 more times.
43RD ROW – (THIS IS 1ST DECREASING ROW): K 2 together, * P 1, K 6, (P 1, K 1) twice; repeat from * across, end last repeat with P 1, K 2 together.
Mark each decreasing row.
44TH ROW: P 1, * K 1, P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice; repeat from * across ending with K 1, P 1.
45TH ROW: K 1, * P 1, a cable st over next 6 sts, (P 1, K 1) twice; repeat from * across ending with P 1, K 1.
46TH ROW: Same as 44th row.
47TH ROW: K 1, * P 1, K 6, (P 1, K 1) twice; repeat from * across ending with P 1, K 1.
48TH ROW: Same as 44th row.
49TH ROW: Same as 47th row.
Repeat last 6 rows (from 44th to end of 49th row) once; repeat 44th, 45th, 46th, 47th and 48th rows once more (there are 60 rows in all or 30 rows on ¾-length coat).
61ST ROW – (2ND DECREASING ROW): P 2 together, * K 6, (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1; repeat from * across, end with K 6, P 2 together.
62ND ROW; * K 1, P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice; repeat from * across, end with K 1.
63RD ROW: * P 1, a cable st over next 6 sts, (P 1, K 1) twice; repeat from * across ending with P 1.
64TH ROW: Same as 62nd row.
65TH ROW: * P 1, K 6, (P 1, K 1) twice; repeat from * across ending with P 1.
66TH THROUGH 72ND ROW: Work 7 rows in pattern st (always knitting all knitted sts and purling all purled sts and twisting cables in every 6th row).
73RD – (3RD DECREASING ROW): K 2 together, K 5, * (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1, K 6; repeat from * across, end with K 5, K 2 together.
74TH ROW: * P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice, K 1; repeat from * across, end with P 6.
75TH ROW: A cable st over first 6 sts, * (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1, a cable st over 6 sts; repeat from * across.
76TH THROUGH 84TH ROW: Work 9 rows even in pattern st (always twisting cables in every 6th row).
85TH ROW – (4TH DECREASING ROW): P 2 together, K 4; work in pattern st across ending with K 4, K 2 together.
86TH ROW: K 1, P 4; work in pattern st across, end with P 4, K 1.
87TH ROW: P 1, work a small cable st over 4 sts as follows: slip next 2 sts onto extra needle, K next 2 sts on left hand needle, K 2 sts from extra needle, * (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1, a cable over 6 sts; repeat from * across, end with a small cable over 4 sts, P 1.
88TH ROW: Same as 86th row.
Work 8 rows even in pattern st.
97TH ROW – (5TH DECREASING ROW): K 2 together, K 3, * (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1, K 6; repeat from * across, end with K 3, K 2 together.
98TH ROW: P 4; continue in pattern st ending with P 4.
99TH ROW: A small cable over first 4 sts; work in pattern st across ending with a small cable.
Work 3 rows even in pattern st.
103RD ROW – (6TH DECREASING ROW): K 2 together, K 2, * (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1, K 6; repeat from * across, end with K 2, K 2 together.
104TH ROW: P 3; continue in pattern st across ending with P 3.
Work 4 rows even.
FOR SIZE 36-38 ONLY – NEXT DECREASING ROW: Work in pattern decreasing a st at beginning and end of row. Work 5 rows even. Work another decreasing row.
FOR ALL SIZES: Continue to work even in pattern (77 sts on needle for size 32-34 or 84 sts for size 36-38) until knitted piece measures (allowing for stretching) – FOR FULL-LENGTH COAT: About 31 inches for size 32-34 or 33 inches for size 36-38 (or for desired length to armhole) – FOR ¾-LENGTH COAT: About 23 inches for size 32-34 or 25 inches for size 36-38 (or for desired length to armhole).
FOR ANY LENGTH: End with first row after a cable st row (on wrong side of pattern st).
ARMHOLE – 1ST ROW: Bind off 5 sts; (for size 32-34 only work K 1, P 1); for both sizes * K 6, (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1; repeat from * across, end with K 3 (or K 1 for size 36-38).
2ND ROW: Bind off 5 sts; (for size 32-34 only P 1, K 1); for both sizes * P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice, P 1; repeat from * across, end with K 1.
3RD ROW: K 2 together; continue in pattern st across ending with K 2 together.
4TH ROW: Same as last row.
5TH ROW: P 1; for size 32-34 work a cable over 6 sts (or for size 36-38 a small cable over 4 sts); for both sizes * (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1, a cable over 6 sts; repeat from * across, end with a cable st (or a small cable for size 36-38), P 1.
6TH ROW: P 2 together; work in pattern st across ending with P 2 together.
7TH ROW: K 2 together; work in pattern st across ending with K 2 together.
Repeat 6th and 7th rows of Armhole once; repeat 6th row once more (53 sts on needle for size 32-34 or 60 sts for size 36-38).
11TH ROW: Work in pattern, twisting cables. Continue to work even in pattern st for 19 more rows for size 32-34 (or 23 more rows for size 36-38). Armhole should measure, straight up from 1st row, about 8 inches for size 32-34 (or 9 inches for size 36-38).
SHOULDERS: Always continuing in pattern st, bind off 6 sts for size 32-34 (or 7 sts for size 36-38) at beginning of each of next 6 rows.
Bind off remaining 17 sts (or 18 sts for size 36-38).

RIGHT FRONT

With large-size needles, cast on 43 sts for size 32-34 (or 54 sts for size 36-38).
1ST ROW: P 1, * K 6, (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1; repeat from * across, end with K 6, P 1, K 1, P 1.
2ND ROW: K 1, P 1, K 1, * P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice, K 1; repeat from * across row, end with P 6, K 1.
3RD ROW: P 1, * a cable st over next 6 sts (as on 3rd row of Back), P 1, (K 1, P 1) twice; repeat from * across, end with P 1, K 1, P 1.
4TH ROW: Same as 2nd row.
5TH AND 6TH ROWS: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows.
These 6 rows form pattern st.
Repeat first 6 rows 6 more times for a full-length coat (or once for a ¾-length coat).
43RD ROW – (1ST DECREASING ROW): Work as 1st row but end with P 1, K 2 together (this forms a decrease at underarm edge).
Mark each decreasing row.
44TH ROW: P 1, * K 1, P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice; repeat from * across, end with K 1. Being careful to continue in pattern st (twisting cable in every 6th row), work 16 rows even. There are 60 rows in all (or 30 rows for ¾-length coat).
61ST ROW – (2ND DECREASING ROW): Work in pattern st across ending with K 6, P 2 together.
62ND ROW: * K 1, P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice; repeat from * across, end with K 1.
63RD ROW: * P 1, a cable st over 6 sts, (P 1, K 1) twice; repeat from * across, end with P 1.
Work 9 rows even.
73RD ROW – (3RD DECREASING ROW): Work in pattern across ending with K 5, K 2 together.
74TH ROW: * P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice, K 1; repeat from * across, end with K 1.
Work 10 rows even.
85TH ROW – (4TH DECREASING ROW): Work in pattern st across ending with K 4, P 2 together.
86TH ROW: K 1, P 4; work in pattern across.
87TH ROW: Work in pattern across ending with a small cable over 4 sts, P 1.
88TH ROW: K 1, P 4; work in pattern across.
Work 8 rows even.
97TH ROW – (5TH DECREASING ROW): Work in pattern ending with K 3, K 2 together.
98TH ROW: P 4; work in pattern across.
99TH ROW: Work a cable st row ending with a small cable over end 4 sts.
Work 3 rows in pattern st.
103RD ROW – (6TH DECREASING ROW): Work in pattern st across ending with K 2, K 2 together.
Work 5 rows in pattern st.
FOR SIZE 36-38 ONLY – (NEXT DECREASING ROW): Work a row in pattern st decreasing a st at end of row. Work 5 rows even. Work another decreasing row same as last.
FOR ALL SIZES: Continue to work even in pattern st (37 sts on needle for size 32-34 or 46 sts for size 36-38) until you have same number of rows as Back up to Armhole but ending with a cable st row, at underarm edge.
ARMHOLE – 1ST ROW: Bind off 5 sts; work in pattern st across.
2ND ROW: Work in pattern st across.
3RD ROW: K 2 together; work in pattern st across.
4TH ROW: Work in pattern st across ending with P 2 together.
5TH ROW: Work in pattern st across.
6TH ROW: Work in pattern st across ending with P 2 together.
7TH ROW: K 2 together; work in pattern st across.
FOR SIZE 36-38 ONLY: Repeat 6th and 7th rows of Armhole twice (33 sts on needle for size 36-38).
FOR ALL SIZES: Work even in pattern st for 18 rows ending at front edge.
Armhole should now measure, straight up from 1st row, 6½ inches for size 32-34 (or 7½ inches for size 36-38).
SHAPING FOR NECKLINE – 1ST SHORT ROW: Bind off 6 sts for size 32-34 (or 8 sts for size 36-38); work in pattern across.
2ND SHORT ROW: Work in pattern across ending with K 2 together.
3RD SHORT ROW: K 2 together; work in pattern across.
Repeat last 2 rows once ending at armhole edge.
SHOULDER – 1ST SHORT ROW: Bind off 6 sts (or 7 sts for size 36-38); work in pattern across.
2ND SHORT ROW: Work in pattern across. Repeat last 2 rows once. Bind off remaining sts.

LEFT FRONT

1ST ROW: P 1, K 1, P 1, * K 6, (P 1, K 1) twice, P 1; repeat from * across, end with K 6, P 1.
2ND ROW: K 1, * P 6, (K 1, P 1) twice, K 1; repeat from * across, end with P 1, K 1, P 1.
3RD ROW: P 1, K 1, P 1, * a cable st over 6 sts, P 1, (K 1, P 1) twice; repeat from * across, end with P 1.
4TH ROW: Same as 2nd row.
5TH AND 6TH ROWS: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows.
Repeat first 6 rows 6 more times for a full-length coat (or once for a ¾-length coat).
1ST DECREASING ROW: K 2 together (this forms a decrease at underarm edge); work in pattern across.
Being careful to twist cables in every 6th row, work in pattern for 17 rows (ending at underarm edge).
2ND DECREASING ROW: K 2 together; work in pattern across.
Work 11 rows in pattern.
Repeat last 12 rows (from 2nd decreasing row) twice more.
5TH DECREASING ROW: Decrease a st at beginning of row as before.
Work 5 rows even.
Repeat last 6 rows (from 5th decreasing row) once for size 32-34 (or 3 times for size 36-38); there are 37 sts on needle (or 46 sts for size 36-38).
Continue to work even over these sts until you have same number of rows as Right Front up to Armhole eliding with row right after a cable st row at underarm edge. Now follow directions for Right Front from Armhole to end of Shoulder.

SLEEVES

With large-size needles, cast on 45 sts for all sizes.
RIBBING – 1ST ROW: (K 1, P 1) across row, end with K 1.
2ND ROW: (P 1, K 1) across, end with P 1.
Repeat last 2 rows once.
PATTERN STITCH: Follow directions for first 6 rows of Back.
Repeat first 6 rows once; repeat 1st and 2nd rows once more.
15TH ROW: Increase a st in first st, work a cable st row across to end st, increase a st in end st.
16TH THROUGH 20TH ROW: Work 5 rows even in pattern.
Repeat last 6 rows (from 15th row to end of 20th row) 4 more times for size 32-34 (or 6 more times for size 36-38); there are 55 sts on needle for size 32-34 (or 59 sts for size 36-38).
Continue to work even until piece measures 15 inches for size 32-34 (or 16 inches for size 36-38) from cast-on sts.
ARMHOLE: Always working in pattern st, bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of 2 rows. Decrease a st at beginning and end of each of next 16 rows (or 18 rows for size 36-38). Bind off remaining sts.
Make a duplicate sleeve.

BLOCKING
Stretch and pin each section to the correct size and shape on a padded surface; cover with a damp cloth; steam (do not press) with a warm iron. Remove when dry.

JOINING OF SECTIONS
Using a darning needle and a single strand of yarn, overcast back and front sections together across shoulders and at underarms, leaving a 6-inch opening at lower edge. Overcast underarms of sleeves; fit sleeves in armholes and overcast in place.

NECKBAND
Having right side toward you, and using small-size needles, pick up 56 sts for size 32-34 (or 60 sts for size 36-38).
Work in ribbing of (K 1, P 1) for 8 rows. Bind off loosely.

FRONT BANDS
BUTTONHOLE BAND: With small-size needles, cast on 6 sts.
1ST ROW: (K 1, P 1) across row. Repeat 1st row twice.
4TH ROW: K 1, P 1, bind off 2 sts (this will form buttonhole), P 1.
5TH ROW: K 1, P 1, cast on 2 sts, K 1, P 1.
6TH THROUGH 19TH ROWS: Work 14 rows in ribbing of (K 1, P 1).
Repeat last 16 rows (from 4th row to end) 6 more times. Continue in ribbing of (K 1, P 1) until band measures same as front edge – (top of neck edge to lower edge of coat). Bind off.
BUTTON BAND: With small-size needles, cast on 6 sts. Work in ribbing of (K 1, P 1) until piece measures same as buttonhole band. Bind off.
JOINING OF BANDS: Overcast front bands to front edges, having buttonholes along top section of right front. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.

¾-LENGTH COAT (FOR ALL SIZES)
Follow directions for first 6 rows of Back for Full-Length Coat. Repeat these 6 rows once. Now follow directions for Full-Length Coat from 43rd row of Back to end.
