HOW TO USE THE KEY LETTERS IN DIRECTIONS

Most of the afghans in this book can be made of two or more different yarns, as indicated in the material column listed for each design. Key letters, such as A, B, C, are used in the directions to indicate the color numbers of the yarns, depending upon which one you have chosen to use for your afghan.

As an example, in making the Empire Afghan, if you have chosen Bear Brand or Bucilla Zephyr Germantown (balls), letter A indicates Grey, color 461—letter F indicates Rose, color 830; if, however, you are using Bear Brand Afghan Germantown (skeins), letter A, indicates Grey, color 659, and letter F, indicates Rose, color 691.

DETAILS OF CROSS STITCH EMBROIDERY

CROCHET STITCHES

Short Double Crochet (s d c)—Make a chain the length required, turn, skip 2 chs, * yarn over and draw up a loop in next ch, yarn over and through all 3 loops on hook; repeat from * in each ch to other end. A new row is begun with 2 chs after turning. This st is sometimes called half double crochet.

Double Crochet (d c)—Make a chain the length required, turn, yarn over, insert the hook in 4th ch from hook and draw yarn through, having 3 loops on hook; yarn over and through 2 loops, again yarn over and through 2 loops. For the 2nd st, * over and through next ch, over and through 2 loops and then over and through 2 loops more, as before; repeat from * to other end of chain. 2nd row: turn, ch 3, over, insert hook in top of the 2nd d c of preceding row, taking up both threads, and work off as in 1st row. The chain 3 counts as 1 d c.

Afghan or Tunisian Stitch—Make a chain the desired length. Draw up a loop through the horizontal bar in the back of second and all succeeding sts, retaining loops on hook. There will be the same number of loops on hook as the number of sts in chain. This is half of the afghan row. Work off as follows: yarn over and through end loop, * over and through 2 loops; repeat from * to the end. 2nd row: the loop that remains on the hook is the first st of this row. Pick up a loop through the second and all succeeding vertical bars, retaining loops on hook. Work off as directed for first row. Repeat 2nd row for desired length. Bind off last row as follows: draw up a loop in 1st vertical thread as usual and draw yarn also through the loop on hook. Continue to work in this way to end of row and fasten off.

When making this stitch as the foundation for cross stitch embroidery, keep the loops on hook close and work back loosely, thus forming perfect squares on which to work.

Classic Knitted Afghan

BASKET-WEAVE STRIPS—With green, cast on 29 sts and k 1 row. 1st row of pattern: k 4, p 5, k 11, p 5, k 4. 2nd row: k 9, p 11, k 9. 3rd row: same as 1st row. 4th row: same as 2nd row. 5th row: same as 1st row. 6th row: k all sts. 7th row: k 12, p 5, k 12. 8th row: k 4, p 8, k 5, p 8, k 4. 9th row: same as 7th row. 10th row: same as 8th row. 11th row: same as 7th row. 12th row: k all sts. These 12 rows make the basketweave pattern; repeat them 43 times, then repeat the first 6 rows of pattern once more (strip should now measure about 67 inches in length); bind off. (More)

Empire Afghan

AFGHAN STITCH STRIPS—With rose J and size 4 hook, ch 15, draw up a loop through the horizontal bar in the back of second and all succeeding ch sts, retaining all 15 loops on hook. This is half of the afghan row. Work off as follows: yarn over and through end loop, * over and through 2 loops; repeat from * to the end. 2nd row: the loop that remains on the hook is the first st of this row. Pick up a loop through the second and all succeeding vertical bars, retaining loops on hook. Work off as directed for first row. (More)

Durbar Afghan

With brown A, ch 266 (a multiple of 6 plus 2), skip first st, 1 s c in each st to end of chain. 2nd row: ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each st, taking up 2 threads of sts below. 3rd row: ch 1, turn, 1 s c in first s c, 1 d c in first s c of 1st row, inserting hook under 2 vertical threads of this st, * skip 1 s c in 2nd row (right behind the d c), 1 s c in each of the next 5 s c in 2nd row, 1 d c in 6th s c from last d c in 1st row; repeat from * to end of row, fasten off. Shaded Diamond Afghan

DIAMONDS (1 on chart)—With Scarlet A, ch 4, * yarn over, draw up a loop (about 1/2 inch) in 4th st from hook; repeat from * twice, yarn over and through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 (bean st), 1 d c in same st. 2nd row: ch 3, turn, work a bean st in first space (the space between the d c and the bean st of row below) 1 bean st in next space, 1 d c in same space. 3rd row: ch 3, turn, work a bean st in each space, end with 1 d c in same space as last bean st. Repeat last row, with 1 bean st more in each row, until 6 rows from beginning; break off. (More)

Pine Tree Afghan

AFGHAN STITCH STRIPS—With tan A ch 20. 1st row: draw up a loop in 2nd st from hook; retaining loops on hook, draw up a loop in each st of chain (20 loops on hook). This is half of afghan-stitch row; work off loops as follows: yarn over and through end loop, * over and through 2 loops, repeat from * until only 1 loop remains. 2nd row: * draw up a loop in the vertical bar of next st and retain loop on hook; repeat from * to end, again having 20 loops on hook; work off loops as directed for 1st row. Marie Antoinette Afghan

WIDE STRIP-With tan A, ch 46, draw up a loop through the horizontal bar in the back of 2nd and all succeeding chains, retaining loops on hook (46 loops on hook). This is half of afghan stitch row. Work off as follows: yarn over and through end loop, * over and through 2 loops; repeat from * to end. 2nd row: the loop that remains on hook is the first st of this row. (More)

Ripple Afghan and Pillow

With brown K, ch 330, skip first st from hook, work 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, inserting hook in horizontal thread back of chain sts, skip 1 st, * 1 s c in each of 11 sts, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of 11 sts, skip 2 sts; repeat from * 12 times; the last time skip only 1 st; 1 s c in each of the last 2 sts. 2nd row: ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each of the first 2 sts, taking up both threads of st below, skip 1 st, * 1 s c in each of the next 11 sts, taking up back thread only of sts below, 3 s c in back thread of next st, 1 s c in back thread of each of the next 11 sts, skip 2 sts. Granny Afghan

SQUARES—With first color, ch 5, join with a slip st; ch 3, 2 d c in ring, ch 2, 3 d c in ring, ch 2, 3 d c in ring, ch 2, 3 d c in ring, ch 2, join with a slip st to top of chain 3 at beginning of round; fasten off. 2nd round: with 2nd color, work 3 d c in space made by chain 2 in round below, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c, ch 1, * 3 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c, ch 1; repeat from * to end of round and fasten off. 3rd round: with 3rd color, work 3 d c in a corner space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c, ch 1, 3 d c in next space, ch 1, 3 d c in next corner space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c; continue in this way to end of round and fasten off.
