This free pattern originally published by Clark's O.N.T. J&P Coats as Bags, Book 228.
MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 6 balls (1 oz. balls) of Navy and 2 balls of Scarlet ... Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) ... ¾ yard of felt or lining material ... 4 bone rings, about 2 inches in diameter ... 2 six-inch rulers.
GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.
BOTTOM SECTION ••• With Navy, cast on 41 sts. 1st row: Knit across. 2nd row: Purl across. 3rd row: Attach Scarlet, k 5 Navy, * k 1 Scarlet, k 5 Navy. Repeat from * across. Always carry unused color loosely across wrong side of work. 4th row: P 4 Navy, * p 3 Scarlet, p 3 Navy. Repeat from * across, ending with p 4 Navy. 5th row: K 5 Navy, * k 1 Scarlet, k 5 Navy. Repeat from * across. Drop Scarlet. 6th row: Repeat 2nd row. 7th row: Repeat 1st row. 8th row: Pick up Scarlet, p 2 Navy, * p 1 Scarlet, p 5 Navy. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2 Navy. 9th row: K 1 Navy, * k 3 Scarlet, k 3 Navy. Repeat from * across, ending with k 1 Navy. 10th row: Repeat 8th row. Drop Scarlet. Repeat these 10 rows 3 more times, then repeat 1st and 2nd rows once more. Bind off.
SIDEPIECE (Make 4) ••• Starting at top with Navy, cast on 41 sts. Work 10 rows same as Bottom Section, then, keeping continuity of pattern, inc 1 st at beginning of each row until there are 81 sts on needle. Now dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 41 sts remain. Work 2 more rows of Navy. Bind off.
HANDLE ••• With Navy, cast on 16 sts. 1st row: * K 1, bring yarn forward, sl 1 as if to purl, carry yarn to back of work. Repeat from * across. Repeat 1st row until piece measures 12 inches. Bind off, knitting 2 sts together across row.
With Navy, cover 4 rings by working sc closely over each ring. Block sections of bag. Allowing ½ inch all around for seams, cut lining to correspond with Bottom Section and Sidepieces. Sew Sidepieces of bag together. Sew Bottom Section in place. Join lining in same way. Insert a square of cardboard in bottom of bag and rulers at top of 2 facing sections. Line bag, tacking lining so that cardboard and rulers remain in place. Sew a covered ring to center top of each Sidepiece. Sew ends of Handle to one reinforced side at outer base of the ring, then slip loop through remaining rings to close.
