What You Need:
BEEHIVE SCOTCH FINGERING, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins).
Sizes 7½-8 or 8½-9 – 2 skeins of main color.
Size 9½-10 – 3 skeins of main color.
1 skein of contrasting color for each size.

Note: Colors will be referred to as follows: Main color—M, Contrasting color—C.
GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.
Sizes 7½-8 (8½-9, 9½-10).
With M cast on 60 sts loosely. Do not join, but, using only 2 needles (as a pair) work back and forth in k 2, p 2 ribbing for 4½ inches. Break off M. Take three 2-yard strands of C and two 2-yard strands of M. Work pattern as follows: 1st row: Attach a strand of C and knit across decreasing 4 sts evenly across. 2nd row: P 13 C, attach a strand of M, p 2 M, attach a strand of C, p 26 C, attach a strand of M, p 2 M, attach a strand of C, p 13 C. 3rd row: K 11 C, 6 M, 22 C, 6 M, 11 M. 4th row: P 9 C, 10 M, 18 C, 10 M, 9 C. Continue in this manner, working 2 sts more with M on both sides of each diamond on every row until sts are on needle as follows: 1 C, 26 M, 2 C, 26 M, 1 C. Next row: Knit across, using colors as they are on needle. Following row: P 3 C, 22 M, 6 C. 22 M, 3 C. Next row: K 5 C, 18 M, 10 C, 18 M, 5 C.
Continue in this manner working 2 sts less with M on both sides of each diamond on every row until sts are on needle as follows: 13 C, 2 M, 26 C, 2 M, 13 C. Following row: With C purl across. Break off all strands of yarn. Take three 2-yard strands of M and two 2-yard strands of C. Starting with 1st row, work pattern as before, using M where C was used and C where M was used.
Continue in this manner alternating the diamonds with main and contrasting colors until piece measures 14½ inches in all, ending with the completion of a main color diamond when sts are on needle as follows: 13 C, 2 M, 26 C, 2 M, 13 C. Next row: With C purl across.
HEEL … Break off all strands of yarn. Attach a ball of M and work back and forth in stockinette st with M over the first 14 sts for one-half of heel for 24 rows ending with a purl row. To turn this half of heel, k 1, slip 1 st, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, k 1, turn. Slip 1 st, p 2, turn. Knit 2 sts, slip 1 st, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, k 1, turn. Slip 1 st, p 3, turn. Knit 3 sts, slip 1 st, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, k 1, turn. Continue in this manner until all sts have been worked and 8 sts remain on needle ending with a knit row. With M pick up 12 sts along side of heel, then slip next 28 instep sts onto same needle. Attach a 2nd ball of M for other half of heel and work last 14 sts in stockinette st with M for 23 rows, ending with a knit row. To turn this half of heel, p 1, p 2 together, p 1, turn. Slip 1 st, k 2, turn. P 2, p 2 together, p 1, turn. Slip 1 st, k 3, turn. Continue in this manner until all sts have been worked and 8 sts remain on needle, ending with a purl row. Break yarn. Slip 28 instep sts back onto this needle, turn, attach a strand of M and knit across instep sts. Attach another ball of M and pick up 12 sts along side of heel, then knit last 8 heel sts with M. There are 68 sts on needle. Following row: Purl 20 M, insert a marker on needle, attach a strand of C, p 1 C, p 26 M, attach another strand of C, p 1 C, insert a marker on needle, p 20 M.
To Shape Instep: 1st row: With M, knit across to 2 sts before marker, then k 2 together, slip marker, k 3 C, 22 M, 3 C, slip marker, with M slip 1, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl across to marker with M, slip marker, purl in pattern across 28 instep sts, slip marker, with M purl to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until there are 56 sts on needle. Work in pattern with sts at outside of markers in M until piece measures about 5½ inches from back of heel.
Break off all but 1st ball of M. Divide sts on 3 needles, having the center 28 sts of instep on one (2nd needle) and dividing remaining sts on 2 needles for sole (1st and 3rd needles). Join and work around in stockinette st (knit each rnd) until piece measures from back of heel
5½" (6½", 7½").
To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: Work to last 3 sts on 1st needle, k 2 together, k 1. On 2nd needle, k 1, slip 1 as if to knit, pass slipped st over knit st, work to last 3 sts on 2nd needle, k 2 together, k 1. On 3rd needle, k 1, slip 1 as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, finish rnd. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until 20 sts remain.
Weave sts together, or bind off, fold and sew. Sew back seam.
