2 & 4 yr4 1-oz. Skeins, 6 yr5 1-oz. Skeins
BACK: With No. 3 Needles cast on 86 sts (4 yr.92, 6 yr.98). Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2 in., then work even in stockinette st until piece measures 9 in. (4 yr.10 ½ in., 6 yr11 ½ in.), or desired length from lower edge. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm; decrease 1 st at each end every other row 4 times. Work even until piece measures 3 ½ in. (4 to 64 in.) from underarm, then work in garter st until armhole measures 4 ½ in. (4 yr.4 ¾ in., 6 yr.5 in.) from underarm, ending on right side. Next row (wrong side), work over 20 sts (4 yr.22 sts, 6 yr.24 sts), place on st-holder. Bind off next 30 sts (4 yr.32 sts, 6 yr.34 sts). On remaining sts (left front), work 10 rows even in garter st, then work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at neck edge every other row 6 times (4 yr.8 times, 6 yr.10 times). Cast on 10 sts (4 yr.13 sts, 6 yr.14 sts) at neck edge once. Next row (right side), keeping first 7 sts at neck edge worked in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for buttonband, work as follows: Row 1 (right side)K 1, P 1, over the first 7 sts, P 2, K 6, P 2, K across row. Row 2P 19 sts (4 yr. 26, 6 yr.31), K 2, P 6, K 2; P 1, K 1, over remaining 7 sts. Repeat above 2 rows working a cable twist over the rib of K 6 at front edge, on the 5th and every 6th row to ribbing at lower edge as follows: slip the first 3 sts to a double pointed needle, hold in back of work, K the next 3 sts, then bring the 3 slipped sts forward and K them. Work even until piece corresponds to back, from last decrease at underarm to shoulder. Increase 1 st at underarm edge every other row 4 times. Cast on 5 sts at underarm edge once. Complete to correspond to back from underarm to lower edge. Work right front to correspond, working buttonholes as follows: when piece measures 1 ¾ in. from cast on sts at neck edge, work first buttonhole as follows (right side): K 1, P 1, bind off next 3 sts, P 1, K 1, work across row. Work back casting on 3 sts over the bound off sts. Repeat buttonholes every 2 in. to lower edge.
NECKBAND: With No. 2 Needles, on right side of garment pick up 89 sts (4 yr.95, 6 yr.101) from end to end of neckband, including sts which were placed on pin. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 7 rows, working last buttonhole on 2nd row. Bind off.
SLEEVES: With No. 3 Needles, on right side of garment, pick up 68 sts (4 yr.72, 6 yr.78) from end to end of armhole. Work 4 rows even in garter st, then 8 rows in stockinette st (6 yr.10 rows). Decrease 1 st at each end of the next row and every 8th row 7 times (4 yr.9 times, 6 yr.11 times). Work even until sleeve measures 8 in. (4 yr.10 in., 6 yr.12 in.), or desired length to cuff. Change to No. 2 Needles decreasing to 48 sts (6 yr. 52 sts) at even intervals across row. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2 ½ in. Bind off.
Sew underarm and sleeve seams.
