Size 34
Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 6 balls of main color, and 6 balls of a contrasting color. Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size), and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size). 8 small pearl buttons and 2 buttons for belt. 1½ yards ribbon 1½ inches wide and 1 snap fastener.
Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
Use thread double throughout—1 strand of each color.
Starting at lower edge of entire jacket, with No. 1 needles cast on 287 sts. 1st row: K17, * p 1, k 1, repeat from * across, ending row with p 1, k 17. 2nd row: K 4, p 13, * k 1, p 1, repeat from * across, ending row with k 1, p 13, k 4. Repeat these 2 rows for 1¼ inches. Then change to No. 3 needles and continue as before until work measures 13 inches in all. Next row: With right side of work toward you (the side with stockinette st in band is right side of work), work first 72 sts in pattern (for right front), bind off 5 sts (for armhole), work 133 sts (for back), bind off 5 sts (for armhole), work remaining 72 sts in pattern (for left front).
Left Front. Continue to work in pattern over these last 72 sts, decreasing 1 st at armhole edge every other row for 3 times (69 sts). Then work in pattern straight until work measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape neck, bind off first 17 sts at neck edge, and work in pattern across. Continue in pattern binding off 3 sts at neck edge every other row until 37 sts remain. To shape shoulders, bind off 10 sts at armhole edge and work in pattern across. Then bind off 10 sts every other row until all sts are bound off. Break off.
Back. Attach thread to back on wrong side, and work in pattern, decreasing 1 st at end of every row for 12 times (121 sts). Hereafter work in pattern straight until work measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 10 sts at beginning of each row until 41 sts remain. Bind off remaining sts for back of neck.
Right Front. Work to correspond with left front.
Sleeves. Starting at wrist, with No. 1 needles cast on 56 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1¼ inches. Change to No. 3 needles and continue in ribbing, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 7th row until there are 86 sts on needle. Work straight until work measures 17 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 42 sts remain. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 20 sts remain. Bind off remaining sts. Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams, and sew sleeves in. Turn under the 4 garter sts along front bands and sew in place with invisible stitches.
Neck Band. With No. 1 needles, cast on 13 sts and work in stockinette st until band is long enough to go around neck edge plus 1 inch. Sew band to neck edge along one side, having 1 inch of band extend beyond edge of right front. Turn under edges of extension piece to form a point and sew in position. Line neck band with ribbon.
Line right front band with ribbon, leaving center front edge open, then cut 8 buttonholes at equal distances apart on this piece, and work buttonhole stitch around them. Tack lining to band between buttonholes. Sew buttons on left front band to correspond with buttonholes.
Braided Belt. Measure off 25 strands of one color, each 1¾ yards long (this is one section of braid). Make 1 more section with same color, and 2 sections with the other color. Braid all 4 sections together (as in diagram), and sew a button to each end of braid. Make a similar braid, making strands 1 yd. long, to go around neck band and sew in position. Sew snapper under point of neck band. Make a chain loop on each side of jacket, about 5 inches from lower edge, to hold belt in place.
