Milward's Casein Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size).
GAUGE: 1 pattern (23 sts) makes 4 inches.
Cast on 184 sts. 1st row: * P 2 tog, k 2, O, k 1, O, k 5, p 3 tog, k 2, O, k 1, O, k 5, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across. 2nd and all even rows: P across. 3rd row: * P 2 tog, k 1, O, k 3, O, k 4, p 3 tog, k 1, O, k 3, O, k 4, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across. 5th row: * P 2 tog, O, k 5, O, k 3, p 3 tog, O, k 5, O, k 3, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across. 7th row: * P 2 tog, k 5, O, k 1, O, k 2, p 3 tog, k 5, O, k 1, O, k 2, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across. 9th row: * P 2 tog, k 4, O, k 3, O, k 1, p 3 tog, k 4, O, k 3, O, k 1, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across. 11th row: * P 2 tog, k 3, O, k 5, O, p 3 tog, k 3, O, k 5, O, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across. 12th row: P across. Repeat these 12 rows for pattern until 26 patterns are made, counting patterns on the edge of knitted piece. Bind off. Block to measure 34 inches square.
FRINGE … Cut 4 strands, each 12 inches long. Double these strands, forming a loop. With a crochet hook pull loop through at edge of shawl, and draw the 8 loose ends through this loop. Pull tight to form a knot. Make Fringe about ¾ inch apart, around all 4 sides of shawl. Then knot together 4 strands of 2 adjacent knots, ¾ inch down from 1st row of knots. Continue thus around entire shawl. Make another row of knots in same manner, 1 inch down from last row of knots. Trim fringe evenly.
