With size 2 needles and the main color, cast on 96 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 2½ inches. Change to size 4 needles and knit the next row, increasing to 99 stitches on this row. The next row is the first one shown on the diagram and is worked as follows: knit 1, *purl 9, knit 2, and repeat from * across row, ending with knit 1 instead of knit 2. The second row of the diagram is worked as follows: purl 1, * knit 9, purl 2, and repeat from * across row, ending with purl 1. Follow this ribbing pattern throughout the sweater. On the 8th row of the ribbing pattern, start the cable pattern as follows: on the 9 knit stitches, slip the first 3 stitches onto a double pointed needle and place in back of work, knit the next 3 stitches, bring the 3 stitches on the double pointed needle forward and knit them, knit 3. On the 16th row of the ribbing pattern, work the cable on the 9 knit stitches as follows: knit 3 stitches, slip the next 3 stitches onto a double pointed needle and place in front of work, knit 3, knit 3 stitches from the double pointed needle. Repeat these two cable rows throughout the sweater, except when working in the design. Omit any cable on a row preceding the starting of a design. Resume cable on next cable twist row when design is completed on a rib. Decreases at the underarm are made by binding off the number of stitches shown. Always slip the first stitch when binding off. For the neck opening, work the first 27 stitches. To decrease at neck edge, knit to within 3 stitches of the end of the row, knit 2 together, knit 1. For shoulder, start on the indicated row and bind off at the beginning of 3 consecutive knit rows the number of stitches shown. Place the next 27 stitches on a stitch holder for the neckband. Work the other shoulder to correspond, tying on the yarn at the neck edge. To decrease at the neck edge, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit. For the shoulder, bind off at the beginning of 3 consecutive purl rows.

The next row is the first one shown on the diagram and is worked as follows: * purl 9, knit 2, and repeat from * across row, ending with purl 9. The second row of the diagram is worked as follows: * knit 9 purl 2, and repeat from * across row, ending with knit 9. Work cable pattern as for body of sweater, following chart for design on sleeve. When a row shows increases, increase 1 stitch on the first stitch and 1 stitch on the last. As new stitches are added, keep ribbing pattern as per diagram. Make de- creases for top of sleeve by binding off at the beginning of each row the number of stitches shown. Then bind off the 17 remaining stitches.
