Knitting Worsted: Main color, 6 oz. white
Design colors, 2 oz. light blue, 1 oz. rose
Needles: 1 pair size 3, 1 pair size 5 (standard)

GAUGE: 5½ stitches = 1 inch; 6½ rows = 1 inch; Chest measurement = 25 inches
BACK
With size 3 needles and the main color, cast on 68 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for I¾ inches. Change to size 5 needles and knit the first row shown on the diagram, increasing to 69 stitches on this row. Purl back, then continue following the diagram in the stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row). Decreases for the underarm are made by binding off the number of stitches shown. Always slip the first stitch when binding off. For the shoulders, start on the indicated row and bind off at the beginning of 6 consecutive rows the number of stitches shown, placing the remaining 21 stitches on a stitch holder for the neckband.
LEFT FRONT
With size 3 needles and the main color, cast on 37 stitches. Work the first 30 stitches in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2; then knit 1, purl 1, for the remaining 7 stitches. Continue working these 7 stitches in the seed stitch (knit 1, purl 1, on both the right and wrong sides) for the front band. When the ribbing measures 1¾ inches and with the seed stitch at the left hand side, change to size 5 needles and knit the first row shown on the diagram, increasing 1 stitch at the beginning of the row. Follow the half of the diagram marked "left front," as for back, continuing the seed stitch for the front band. For the neck opening, work the first 19 stitches and place the remaining 13 stitches on a stitch holder for the neckband. Continue working the 19 stitches until the shoulder is completed, binding off for the shoulder at the beginning of every other row the number of stitches shown. For the neck decrease, knit to within 3 stitches of the end of the row, knit 2 together , knit 1.
RIGHT FRONT
Cast on 37 stitches on size 3 needles. Seed stitch the first 7 stitches and knit 2, purl 2, for the remaining 30 stitches. When the ribbing measures 1¾ inches and with the seed stitch at the right hand side, change to size 5 needles and knit the first row shown on the diagram, increasing 1 stitch at the end of the row. Follow the half of the diagram marked "right front," continuing the seed stitch for the front band. The first buttonhole is made in the seed stitch half way up the ribbing, and the other six, every 2¼ inches. To make a buttonhole, bind off the 4th and 5th stitches in from the edge. On the next row, cast on 2 stitches to replace these. For the neck opening, work the first 13 stitches and place them on a stitch holder for the neckband. Then work the remaining 19 stitches for the shoulder, binding off for the shoulder to correspond with left front. For the neck decrease, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit.
SLEEVE
With size 3 needles and the main color, cast on 36 stitches and work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 1¾ inches. Change to size 5 needles and knit the first row shown on the diagram, increasing to 41 stitches on this row (increase about every 7th stitch). Purl back, then follow the diagram, increasing on the first and last stitches on the rows showing increases. Make decreases for top of sleeve by binding off at the beginning of each row the number of stitches shown. Then bind off the 17 remaining stitches.
ASSEMBLY
Assemble the sweater according to the directions on pattern book page. For the neckband, with the right side facing, pick up 64 stitches with size 3 needles. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 7 rows, continuing the first and last 7 stitches in the seed stitch. Make a buttonhole 2¼ inches above the last one on the right front. Bind off loosely in the knit 2, purl 2, pattern.
