Jack Frost Knitting Worsted—Main color, 2-oz. Contrasting color, 1-oz.

RIGHT MITTEN: With Main color cast on 36 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 2, as given for No. 5609, until piece measures 1½ in. from lower edge. Change to contrasting color and continue ribbing for 6 more rows. Change to main color and continue ribbing until piece measures 3 in. from lower edge. K 1 row P 1 row, for 6 rows increasing to 37 sts on the first row, then start thumb gusset as follows: Row 1—K 17, increase 1 st in next st, K 1, increase 1 st in next st, K 17. Row 2—Purl. Row 3—K 17, increase 1 st in next st, K 3, increase 1 st in next st, K 17. Row 4—Purl. Continue increasing in the above manner having 2 more sts between increases every other row until there are 6 increased rows in all. P 1 row after last increased row, then work as follows: K 18; place on st-holder. K next 13 sts for thumb. Place remaining 18 sts on 2nd st-holder. Work back and forth on the 13 thumb sts for 13 rows, then decrease tip of thumb as follows: Row 1—K 1, * K 2 tog., K 1; repeat from * across row. Row 2—P 1, then P 2 tog. across row. Draw remaining sts tog. and fasten off. Sew thumb seam.
   Place the 18 sts from first st-holder to Needle. Attach yarn and pick up 3 sts at base of thumb. Place the sts from 2nd st-holder to left hand Needle and K across row. Purl back, then change to contrasting color and K 1 row, P 1 row, for 6 rows. Change to main color and continue stockinette st until piece measures 3¼ in. from base of thumb. Decrease tip of mitten as follows: Row 1—K 1, K 2 tog., K 13, slip next st, K 1, P S S O (pass slipped st over the K st), K 2 tog., K 1, K 2 tog., K 13, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 1. Row 2 -Purl. Row 3—K 1, K 2 tog., K 11, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 2, K 2 tog., K 11, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 1. Row 4—Purl. Row 5—K 1, K 2 tog., K 9, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 2, K 2 tog., K 9, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 1. Row 6—Purl. Row 7—K 1, K 2 tog., K 7, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 2, K 2 tog., K 7, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 1. Row 8—Purl. Weave or sew tip of mitten tog. Sew side seam.
