PULLOVER
MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 7 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—35 inches. Width across back at underarm—17½ inches. Width across back at shoulder—14 inches. Width across front at underarm—17½ inches. Length from underarm to lower edge—12 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—6½ inches. Width of sleeve at underarm—13 inches.
GAUGE: (Stockinette st) 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
BACK … With No. 1 needles cast on 140 sts and work 4 inches in ribbing of k 2, p 2, decreasing 14 sts on last row (126 sts). Change to No. 4 needles and work 8 inches straight in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row).
TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows and 2 sts at beginning of following 2 rows. Dec. 1 st at end of each row until 94 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Bind off 30 sts for shoulder, bind off next 34 sts loosely for back of neck (sts for neck band will be picked up along these 34 sts); bind off remaining 30 sts for other shoulder.
BACK NECK BAND … Holding right side toward you, with No. 1 needles pick up 46 sts along the 34 sts bound off loosely, and work in ribbing, starting and ending with p 2, for 1 inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
FRONT … Work as for Back until piece measures 4¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Next row: Work across 1st 42 sts, bind off 14 sts loosely (thus starting neck shaping), work across remaining 42 sts. Work over these 42 sts, binding off 3 sts at neck edge every other row until 30 sts remain. Work straight until armhole measures 6 inches. Bind off for shoulder. Work opposite side to correspond.
FRONT NECK BAND … Holding right side toward you, with No. 1 needles pick up 86 sts along neck edge. Work 1 inch in ribbing. Bind off loosely.
SLEEVES … With No. 1 needles cast on 90 sts and work 1 inch in ribbing, decreasing 16 sts on last row (74 sts). Change to No. 4 needles and work ½ inch in stockinette st. Inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are 90 sts. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches in all. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows and 2 sts at beginning of following 8 rows. Then bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 12 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up shoulder, underarm, and sleeve seams, and sew in sleeves. Press through damp cloth.
CARDIGAN
MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 11 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
1¼ yds. grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.
8 buttons.
MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—38 inches. Width across back at underarm—19 inches. Width across back at shoulder—14½ inches. Width across each front at underarm—9½ inches. Length from underarm to lower edge—14 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—19 inches. Width of sleeve at underarm—12 inches.
GAUGE: (Stockinette st) 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
BACK … With No. 1 needles cast on 160 sts and work 2 inches in ribbing of k 2, p 2, decreasing 27 sts on last row (133 sts). Change to No. 4 needles and work 12 inches in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), ending with a p row.
TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: K 8, slip these 8 sts onto a safety pin, k across to within last 8 sts, slip last 8 sts onto a safety pin (117 sts). * Work straight for ½ inch, ending with a p row. Next row: K 3, k 2 tog., k 2, k 2 tog., k to within last 9 sts, k 2 tog., k 2, k 2 tog., k 3. Repeat from * 3 more times (101 sts). Work straight until armhole measures 7 inches. Bind off 25 sts for shoulder, bind off next 51 sts loosely for back of neck, bind off remaining 25 sts for other shoulder.
RIGHT FRONT … With No. 1 needles cast on 80 sts and work 2 inches in ribbing, decreasing 10 sts on last row (70 sts). Change to No. 4 needles and work 12 inches in stockinette st, making a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge after the 1st 1¼ inches and every 2½ inches thereafter until 7 in all are made—to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 3 sts; on next row cast on 3 sts to replace those bound off.
TO SHAPE ARMHOLE: Starting at underarm edge, work across 1st 8 sts, slip these 8 sts onto safety pin. * Work ½ inch straight, ending with a p row. Next row: Work across to within last 9 sts, k 2 tog., k 2, k 2 tog., k 3. Repeat from * 3 more times (54 sts). Work straight until piece measures 2½ inches from 7th buttonhole.
TO SHAPE NECK: 1st row: Bind off 20 sts at front edge, k 7, k 2 tog., k 25. 2nd and 4th rows: P across. 3rd row: Bind off 3 sts, k 3, k 2 tog., k 25. 5th row: Bind off 3 sts, k 2 tog., k 24. Work in garter st (k each row) over remaining 25 sts for ½ inch. Bind off.
LEFT FRONT … Work as for Right Front, reversing shapings and omitting buttonholes. Sew up shoulder seams.
NECK BAND … With No. 1 needles, holding right side toward you, pick up 160 sts along entire neck edge. Work ¼ inch in ribbing; make a buttonhole in line with previous buttonholes; continue ribbing until band measures ½ inch. Bind off in ribbing.
SLEEVES … K the 8 sts from safety pin at Left Front armhole onto No. 4 needle; pick up 80 sts around armhole, and k the 8 sts from other safety pin (96 sts). Work 4½ inches straight. Dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until 60 sts remain. Work straight until underarm measures 17½ inches, increasing 10 sts on last row. Change to No. 1 needles and work 4 inches in ribbing. Bind off in ribbing.
Sew up underarm and sleeve seams. Pin out to measurements and press through damp cloth. Baste ribbon over center front edges of Right and Left Fronts up to neck edge (including neck band) and machine stitch in place all around edges of ribbon. Cut buttonholes in ribbon to correspond with knitted buttonholes and, with matching sewing thread, work buttonholes together with buttonhole stitch. Sew on buttons.
