The patterned squares of this afghan are worked in a special manner that does not require more than one color to be used on any row.

Afghan measures 50 x 70 inches … Motifs measure 10 inches square (after blocking)

COATS & CLARK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 234 (4 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 6 skeins of No. 1 White and 9 skeins of No. 676 Emerald Green.
Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 5.
Aluminum or Plastic Crochet Hook, Size G.

GAUGE: For stockinette st-11 sts = 2 inches; 7 rows = 1 inch.

NOTE: Carry the unused color loosely along side edge. When slipping stitches do not carry the yarn tightly across row.

FIRST MOTIF (Make 18) … With White cast on 52 sts. Starting with a purl row, work even in stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row) for 2½ inches, ending with a p row. Drop White, attach Emerald and using colors as needed, work in pattern as follows: First 4 rows: K 52 Emerald sts. 5th row: K 52 White sts. 6th row: P 52 White sts. 7th row: With Emerald, and holding yarn in front of work, k 3 (holding yarn loosely in back of work, sl 2 sts as if to purl, k 14) 3 times; sl 1. 8th row: With Emerald, sl 1, (p 14, sl 2) 3 times; p 3. 9th row: With White, k 1, (sl 2, k 2, sl 2, k 10) 3 times; sl 2, k 1. 10th row: With White, p 1, sl 2, (p 10, sl 2, p 2, sl 2) 3 times; p 1. 11th row: With Emerald, sl 1, * (k 2, sl 2) twice; k 6, sl 2. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2, sl 1. 12th row: With Emerald, sl 1, p 2, * sl 2, p 6, (sl 2, p 2) twice. Repeat from * across, ending with sl 1. 13th row: With White, k 1, (sl 2, k 2) 12 times; sl 2, k 1. 14th row: With White, p 1, (sl 2, p 2) 12 times; sl 2, p 1. 15th row: With Emerald, sl 1, (k 2, sl 2) 12 times; k 2, sl 1. 16th row: With Emerald, sl 1, (p 2, sl 2) 12 times; p 2, sl 1. Next 8 rows: Repeat the 13th to 16th rows incl twice. 25th and 26th rows: Repeat 13th and 14th rows. 27th row: With Emerald, sl 1, k 2, * sl 2, k 6, (sl 2, k 2) twice. Repeat from * across, ending with sl 1. 28th row: With Emerald, sl 1, * (p 2, sl 2) twice; p 6, sl 2. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2, sl 1. 29th row: With White, k 1, sl 2, (k 10, sl 2, k 2, sl 2) 3 times; k 1. 30th row: With White, p 1, (sl 2, p 2, sl 2, p 10) 3 times; sl 2, k 1. 31st row: With Emerald, sl 1, (k 14, sl 2) 3 times; k 3. 32nd row: With Emerald, p 3, (sl 2, p 14) 3 times; sl 1. 33rd and 34th rows: Repeat 5th and 6th rows. Next 4 rows: Repeat first 4 rows. Break off Emerald. Starting with a knit row, with White work even in stockinette st for 2½ inches. Bind off.
SECOND MOTIF (Make 17) … With Emerald, cast on 52 sts. Starting with a purl row, work even in stockinette st for 10 inches. Bind off. Following diagram (at right), sew motifs together making ¼-inch seams.
BORDER ... 1st rnd (right side): Attach Emerald and sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join as before. Turn. 3rd rnd (wrong side): Sl st in each sc around. Break off. Block to measurements.
