REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4-ounces of Knitting Worsted.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #4 needles for large size or for the medium use #3 Single Pointed.
Starting at the cuff, with the #4 needles cast on 48 sts and work in ribbing of k 2 sts; purl 2 sts for 3 inches. Then k 1 row, p 1 row for 6 rows, end with a purl row.
THUMB INCREASES: 1st inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 2; inc. in next st; k 22 sts. Purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row.
2nd inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 4; inc. in next st; k 22 sts. P 1 row; k 1 row; p 1 row.
3rd inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 6; inc. in next st; k 22 sts. P 1 row; k 1 row; p 1 row.
4th inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 8; inc. in next st; k 22 sts. P 1 row; k 1 row; p 1 row.
5th inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 10; inc. in next st; k 22 sts. P 1 row; k 1 row; p 1 row.
THUMB SEPARATION: K 22 sts; place onto a stitch holder; k 14 sts, leave on the needle; place the remaining sts onto second stitch holder. Cast on 2 sts at the end of the 14 sts; turn and purl across, cast on 2 sts. Now work in stockinette stitch on these 18 sts for 2¾ inches.
1st dec: * K 2 sts tog.; k 4; repeat from * across row. Purl across next row.
2nd dec: * K 2 sts tog.; k 3; repeat from * across row. Purl across next row.
3rd dec: K 2 sts together across the row. Break the yarn, leaving 8 inches. Draw thru the remaining sts tightly and fasten off on the wrong side. Sew up the thumb.
Place the sts off the first st holder back onto the needle; tie yarn in the first st; pick up and knit 4 sts along the thumb; knit the sts off the 2nd st holder. Work on these sts until the piece measures 4 inches above the thumb.
TIP DECREASES: 1st dec: * Knit 4 sts; k 2 sts tog.; repeat from * across row. P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.
2nd dec: * K 3 sts; k 2 sts tog.; repeat from * across row. P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.
3rd dec: * K 2 sts; k 2 sts tog.; repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row.
4th dec: * K 1 st; knit 2 sts tog.; repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row.
Last dec: K 2 sts together across the row. Break yarn leaving 14 inches. Draw thru the remaining sts and fasten tightly on the wrong side. Sew up the side of the mitten.
MAKE THE OTHER MITTEN THE SAME WAY.
