REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4-ounces of Fluffy or 4-ounces Knitting Worsted used two strands.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #8 Single Pointed.
RIGHT MITTEN: With the #8 needles cast on 24 sts and work as follows.
1st row – K 4 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 15 sts.
2nd row – P 15 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, p 4 sts. Repeat these 2 rows for 3 inches.
THUMB INCREASES: Work over 13 sts; cast on 1 st, k 1, cast on 1 stitch, k 10. Next row and every 2nd row (rows 2-4-6-8) – Work back as the sts are on the wrong side.
2nd inc: Work over 13 sts; cast on 1 st, k 3, cast on 1 st, k 10.
3rd inc: Work over 13 sts; cast on 1 st, k 5, cast on 1 st, k to the end of the row.
4th inc: Work over 13 sts; cast on 1 st, k 7, cast on 1 st, knit to the end of the row.
9th row – K 4, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, knit to the end of row.
10th row – Work back as the sts are. THUMB SEPARATION – K 4, work over the next 5 sts, k 4, place these 13 sts onto a stitch holder; k 9 leave on the needle, place the remaining sts onto a stitch holder. Cast on 1 stitch at end of thumb sts, turn and purl back across 10 sts; cast on 1 stitch (11 sts). Work on these sts for 10 rows ending on the wrong side. Knit 2 sts tog. across the next row. Break the yarn leaving 8 inches. Draw thru the remaining sts and draw tight and fasten on the wrong side. Sew up the thumb.
Place the sts off the first st holder back onto the needle and tie the yarn at the first st; pick up and knit 4 sts along the base of the thumb; knit the sts off the 2nd st holder. Work as the sts are in the pattern until the mitten measures 3¾ inches above the thumb.
1st dec: K 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 7, k 2 tog., k 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 8, k 2 tog. Work back as the sts are.
2nd dec: K 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 5, k 2 tog., k 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 6, k 2 tog. Work back as the sts are.
3rd dec: K 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 3, k 2 tog., k 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 4, k 2 tog. Work back as the sts are. Knit 2 sts together across the row. Break the yarn, leaving 14 inches. Draw thru the remaining sts and draw tight. Fasten on the wrong side. Sew up the side of the mitten.
LEFT MITTEN: 1st row – K 15 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 4 sts.
2nd row – P 4 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, p 15 sts.
When time to start the thumb increase work over 10 sts; cast on 1 st, k 1, cast on 1 stitch and work the remainder of row. Work to correspond to the right mitten.
