REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4-ounces of Knitting Worsted.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 Single Pointed.
RIGHT MITTEN – Pattern – 1st row: P 2, * k 4, p 2, k 1, p 2, repeat from * three times; ending with k 4, p 2, k 1.
2nd row: P 1, k 2, * p 4, k 2, p 1, k 2, repeat from * three times; p 4, k 2.
3rd row: P 2, * slip the next 2 sts onto a double pointed needle and hold in the back of the work; knit the next 2 sts; knit the 2 sts off the dble. pt. needle (cable); p 2, k 1, p 2, repeat from * three times, ending with cable, p 2, k 1.
4th row – Repeat row 2. Repeat from row 1 to 4 for the pattern.
Starting at the cuff – Cast on 45 sts and work in the above pattern until you have made 4 cable twists; ending with row 4. Now k 1 row, p 1 row for 4 rows.
THUMB INCREASES: 1st inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 1; inc. in next st; k 20 sts. Purl across the next row.
2nd inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 3; inc. in next st; k 20 sts. Purl across next row.
3rd inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 5; inc. in next st; k 20 sts. Purl across next row.
4th inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 7; inc. in next st; k 20 sts. Purl across next row.
5th inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 9; inc. in next st; k 20 sts. Purl across next row.
6th inc: K 22 sts; inc. in next st; k 11; inc. in next st; k 20 sts. Purl across next row.
THUMB SEPARATION: K 22 sts, place these onto a stitch holder; k 15 sts; place the remaining sts onto a stitch holder. Cast on 1 st at the end of the 15 sts; turn and purl across, cast on 1 st at the end of the row (17 sts). Work on these sts in stockinette st for 2 inches.
1st dec: * K 2 sts; knit 2 sts tog.; repeat from * across row. Purl back.
2nd dec: * K 1, k 2 sts tog.; repeat from * across row. Purl back, purling 2 sts together across row. Break the yarn leaving 7 inches. Draw thru the remaining sts and fasten tightly on the wrong side. Sew up the thumb.
Place the sts off the first st holder, back onto the needle; tie yarn at the first st; pick up and knit 4 sts along the thumb; k the sts off the 2nd st holder. Work back and forth on these sts in stockinette stitch until the mitten measures 3½ inches (small size); (3¾ in. medium); (4 in. large); above the place where you picked up the 4 sts.
TIP DECREASES: 1st dec: * K 5 sts; k 2 sts tog; repeat from * across row. P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.
2nd dec: * K 4 sts; k 2 sts tog; repeat from * across row. P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.
3rd dec: * K 3 sts; k 2 sts tog; repeat from * across row. Purl across next row.
4th dec: * K 2 sts; k 2 sts tog; repeat from * across row. Purl across next row.
Last dec: Knit 2 sts together across the row. Break the yarn; leaving 14 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw thru the remaining sts and fasten tightly on the wrong side. Sew up the side of the mitten.
LEFT MITTEN – Do as the right until you come to the thumb increases: start with k 20 sts; inc. in the next st; k 1; inc. in next st; k 22 sts. Finish the rest of the mitten to correspond.
